Have you had much experience with it, JD?
I've had wildly varied reports from Canada. My gf - the infamous "Grammargirl" here on CS - lives in a medium-sized city in Manitoba, and her care seems excellent. Yet her brother, and other Canadians I've corresponded with, don't give particularly high reviews. The care seems to vary a lot depending on location and other factors.
If the insurance companies had paid more to the Docs and hospitals in the beginning, the hospitals wouldn't be charging $10.00 for an aspirin now, in order to get the 5 cents it's worth. I've seen what they pay to the doctor when I receive my claim form. I recently had a mammogram (bill here in front of me) They charged $157., they received $33.03. Think of what they would receive if they charged less?...or a Dr visit which the Dr. charged $100. and the Dr Received $58. Hey, it costs to go to medical school, run an office and have employees. So they up their fees in order to get a somewhat (?) reasonable amount.

Zeelander: When my local congressman John Yarmoth has his town hall, I will have a sign that says.... "Same Healthcare as Congress or hire a new Congress"
The Current Health System - Pros and Cons Exactly, these healthcare cons are pros.
Health insurance, whether public or private, is a racket.
The entire Insurance company and all its employees is nothing but dead weight added cost on top of any actual healthcare costs.
But it's even worse when the state runs the health insurance scam, because you can't sue the state when they gyp you, and you can't just opt out or go to another company.
The worse thing about state health insurance is that it is the first step in building a soviet type socialist state. Believe me, France is already well on its way.

So shoot me if I'm wrong (slap)
I think you're an example, Lady, of someone who's getting the full benefit of everything that's right - or can be right - in the US system. (Much like GG has experienced much of what's right in the Canadian system.)
Now, my question is for those who haven't had such great experiences, or aren't in a particularly secure situation, vis-à-vis the US system.

Hmmm...something tells me that the argument that every society which has "universal health" is headed for a (former) Soviet Union-style system wouldn't be particularly convincing to most people in those systems.
It's akin to the declaration that "mixed free enterprise" such as found in the US inevitably leads to all-out socialism, and thus to a totalitarian society.
I've been hearing that ideological canard for years, and once even espoused it myself, but I've seen that political climatology is rather more complex than that in real life.

That's exactly the problem, greed, at every turn.
And that won't change when the state takes over.
The problem with America in general is, above all, greed. And that greed brought down the whole economy.
ladyfingers: Lets all go to NZ, can we bunk with you?
