While I was out on Thursday night at my cricket clubs anniversary dinner, I was talking to Roy Willougby of RTE's Sports department and naturally enough, the conversation moved to sports. He was telling me that at the last event in Giants Stadium, they played a video of sports memories that happened there and Ray Houghton's goal in 1994 was the only non American one on it.

Anyhow, I thought it would be fun to see what are our own special Irish sporting memories. Maybe it was an All Ireland Final, perhaps it was a football match or a try; it could even be a local game that we hold dear. What do we all recall most fondly and whyhandshake ireland

kildare winning the leinster in 98 was a great year for me, such a long wait and we had so many near misses over the years the whole county was on a high for weeks,,
losing the all ireland to galway that year was such a low point its unbelievable,, but thats the beauty of sport we are up there again challenging and this years leinster final against yourselves was game of the year in my opinion. roll on next year and see what happens,,,

Like most of the country, I remember the Houghton goal in 1994. I`m not a socer, rubgy or hurling fan but will watch big games. My sporting memories are in track and field events...like Sonia in 5000 mtres in Europen and World Chamionships in her day.

I was in an english pub called the Queens in Salou watching it. More Irish than english there though.

It was more than just a soccer match,, ireland was gripped in a recession, emigration and unemployment was at an all time high , england were hot favourites and it gave a lift to the whole country,, think we coud do with another ray houghton now,lol
