I dont know about a lot of you, but I buy my little guy used toys. Its funny what you can find at a thrift store for your kids and what makes them happy for pennies on the dollar.
I unfortunately made the mistake of letting my boy get a Furby, if any of you remember those. He now has 2 of them LOL. Its kind of funny how old toys can bring joy to your children, but yet on the other hand how it can bring misery to us parents. The cat knocked one of the Furby's off the bed the other night and at 2am, I hear "Cockadoodledoo Hee Hee" coming from my sons room and it woke him up with a smile on his face.
Wondering if any of you single moms have memories of Toys revisited.

I am looking for a present for my 8 year old son, but something that is not battery or electronic, something slightly more traditional in the creative sense. Any idead would be appreciated.

Get him a magic set n be prepared to be driven mad whilst he tries to perform n drops things and gets mad when nothing goes as planned. I had hours of it one year when mine was a similar age!

I had the same desires a few years back when my 19 year old was 8. They have these toys I have seen in the specialty shops that are air powered rockets. There's foot pump that makes the rockets fly up about 50 feet or so. If I see any of them out, I'll get the exact name for you next time I'm out and about.
I kind of laugh to myself on the electronic comment. I'm gonna have to accept the fact that my son is addicted to his leapster and he's only 3. It literally keeps his mind busy for hours in a day. He likes to color using it more than he does the crayons in a coloring book

Oh he had that Cath last year, drove us mad so got to get something that will occupy him creatively. Was thinking of a good oil painting by numbers, I knew my sense of achievement when I was his age and my mum framed it and put it in the lounge.

I got my boys a pony when they were about that age. That pony taught all four boys to ride, a little responsability with taking care of him. and a lifetime of enjoyment with learning to ride.

That had to have been just somethin to see their faces when you brought the pony home to them :)

Bought my son a donkey (well sponsored one in a donkey sanctuary) He was so happy when I took him to see it and he got to stroke and feed it. He uses the photo of it for his wallpaper on his netbook.

Hi Don, not sure if you have covered it aleready but I build plastic model airplanes & the occassional ship/tank/car, thoiugh tend to buy more than I can build!! Drop me a line if interested as I can recommend kits & for anyone else also. Has stood me in good stead as I can actually build flat-pack furniture in one day
Also, how about meccano?? Not sure if you have seen any of James May's recent 'Toy Stories' but can give a few hints:
There is also photography, but not digital, black & white film processing, as decent cameras & dark-room stuff can be found pretty cheaply now (dearest thing is probably the film itself now!!). There are also basic pin-hole camera kits you can get. Best you are there to supervise & again, any info needed, contact me.
Only others that come to mind would be fishing, archery and kite flying

Some good ideas there. I made a very good Delta kite with him in the summer from rip stop nylon. I was looking also at the idea of a balsa kit to do a glider. Mecanno i looked at but very flimsy stuff these days. Airfix seem to be hard to find. We used to have some good hobby shops here but alas not anymore. had lots of fun with the old jetex engines in my youth.
friends4now: i always buy my son gently used toysthere are a few out there i will spend the money on especially if i wanna play with them too
((i get more fun out of some of his toys than he does))Furby! i had one that was Gizmo from the Gremlins and i lived it*mental note look for furbys
I have fun playing with my son and his toys. All we have is eachother. However, I steal his Leapster from him after he goes to bed LOL. Its fun to revisit your youth. It keeps me young.
911gypsy: My son had a Darth Vader piggy bank. It was up in his closet in his room and a few times it would all of a sudden say......"Luke.....I AM YOUR FATHER"
Scared the beeeeeeeegeeeeeeeeuz out of us!!!
My son has one of those too. It plays the darth vader theme song and says "Impressive, Most Impressive, but youre not a Jedi yet" and the light saber lifts up. I love that thing.

Tools are always good. My brother and I both had wood working tools, socket sets and some power tools before we were in our teens.
I was given a real microscope on year that had been retired from service in a lab. Had a blast with that.
We had an old centrifuge for a while but it was trashed with good reason. It was fun to try to fix it though.
