I realize that there is no one "best" camera for taking pictures viewed on the Web, but do you have any recommendations for a good digital camera in the $200 (more or less) range?

Thanks for all advice. I am sure others will be interested as well. cheers

Depends on what you want to do with the camera overall.. but if it's just general 'point & shoot' or friends/vacationing pictures you are going for, then most any digital still camera will work. You can get darn good resolution now these days for $200 (ie. megapixels). There are many good brands, and of course there's the top 3 (Canon, Nikon, Sony) - but do yourself a favor and try it out first before you buy. Always best to be happy with the results between makes.

That's a good point. I was thinking mainly resolution quality for the Internet and picture sharing, but I would like good quality for prints out too.

With the digital still cameras, you can get decent quality for $100 (pocket camera types) with anywhere between 5-8 Megapixels. The slightly bigger bodied digital still cameras for $200 or more, will give you much greater zoom ability, and you can get anywhere between 5-10 Megapixels. Again, compare the brands and the results. ALSO - as I forgot to mention while testing them out, they differ in features, as well as ease of use. Good luck.

Tip, Sony Cybershot cameras are not built by Sony, they are rebadged Samsung product so don't pay for the name, buy the same product with the Samsung name!!!

There's lots available in your budget, from Canon Powershot to Panasonic's Lumix, but if you let me know what your after, like the amount of megapixels, zoom lens etc i'll suggest a few reliable easy to use models.grin

I'd probaby go as high as $300 or so if I was sold on the camera. $500 up I'm not sure is necessary - I think most people buy the mid-range models. I like sharp clear pictures for Internet publishing or sharing and if possible for printing.

Thanks! :)

(I didn't know that about Sony.)

I'd recommend the Canon EOS cameras, there reliable, easy to use and very reasonable.

Go to a decent honest retailer and say to them you want a camera with "low digital noise" and if they know what it is and give you honest advice and will cut you a good deal go with them.

Don't be fooled by Karl Zeiss lenses either, there not made by Zeiss, there made by Kyroceta (there really good and to prove it you'll see one in my profile picture!!).

Another tip is don't just look at the megapixel rate, this includes the noise which reduces the clarity of the pictures, so go to a decent retailer (an Independent Shop will be best) and ask for their honest advice.

I just checked your profile and saw you are in the printing/publishing media world.
I myself would stick with the mfr. who have been making cameras that are actively used in your world, Canon or Nikon.
Essentially, today's cameras are just computers with lenses on them. This is why there are other mfg. in the market, it is just computer chips. The quality of the lens and how the image chip handles the image is what you need to be aware of.

You need to check how the $2-300 range handles NOISE and their color reproduction.
Other then that, not bragging or putting on airs, I do not have experience with any cameras under $450. That is the level of the Canon "G" series. The latest being the Canon G11.
If you could find a a good "G9" on ebay that might be an option for you.
The "G" series are using the same image sensing chips/software that the bigger DSLR's are using. Those chips in the 20d, 40d, 50d are really good at what they do.
However, a new G11 is about $450.00 or so. Hence, ebay!

The best thing to do is to check that website I posted earlier, for how the cameras perform.
