Maybe it does not exist anymore but I know a lot of chefs who trained in Killybegs and they were funded by CERT. The courses were offered in Colleges all around the country and it was a world wide recognized qualification at the time. Nice while it lasted, going to college and getting paid for it.
From what I remember the applications had to be in early and then there was an interview process.
Conrad Gallagher trained through CERT in Killybegs.

wexlady41: You have to apply to your local Co. Council. Application forms are usually available in July or August.

Keep all your CAO details, number, offer etc as you will need these for your grant application. They base your eligibility on last years income. Grant rates are higher if you are claiming social welfare.

If you are signing on more than 9 months at the start of your course.. apply for Back to Education Allowance. You get to keep your Jobseekers Benefit/Allowance and it is paid at full rate regardless of whether you have means assessed against you before the course. Up to this year there was a "book allowance" of €500 which is paid out once you have confirmation that you have started the course. Don't know if that will be paid this year..cutbacks and all that. Won't know til probably August.Hope this all helps and good luck with the course.

Thank you, that was very helpful. So does the grant basically pay for the college fee yes?

Exhausted24: well when I applied for a college course when I was 18 i applied through the cao and a few months before the course started I got confirmation that I was accepted and i got forms to fill in about a grant, I wasnt entitled to the grant because i lived at home and my parents income was above the threshold so i roughed it out for 3 years lived on a 60 euro weekly allowance i got from my parents

Ouch, that must have been tough. Well i am well away from my parents and i have my own place. So hopefully i might get a grant. What did you study?

robpacciani: yeah, i read the link. I dont fully understand it. It says under the back to education grant that you have to pass criteria, but i cannot find the criteria.

Your co.council website should have the criteria. If not the Dept of Education website does. At this stage the figures (income limits/grant rates) will be 2009. 2010 figures aren't updated until the summer.

There are different levels of grant..from half fees only to full fees and maintenance grant. Depends on your income last year (2009). If you were working most of last year and are not now... you can write to the co. council with your application ad ask them to base their assessment on current income instead of last years. They don't always do this but it's worth a try if that is the case.

In response to: Hey folks, i have applied to GMIT today, applied for 5 courses, Culinary Arts, Business in Culinary Arts, Bar Management, Hotel and Catering Management and Customer and Retail Management. I havent the foggiest about the procedures of applying for a grant, I dont even know if i would be entitled to one, I am 22, I am not a mature student but i am out of work for over a year now. If anyone could help it would be great, Cheers..

I am such a stubborn witch, thought the blue rinse had finally killed all the brain cells but here ya go

Hope you find this informative there is no age limit to get the grant and they do offer a course in Sligo.wave

I know another chef who trained here and went on to win young chef of the year, nearly fell over when I saw him on RTE lol.He now owns a fantastic restaurant in Cavan, never thought you would get Carpaccio in Cavan but he was serving itbanana

GMIT is also covered by cert and I would almost guarantee that if you make your application through cert your course is paid for and you will also get a training grant.

Cert is now part of Failte Ireland. They don't do a lot of courses the way they used to. Fas funds most of their short courses now. Any courses longer than a few weeks are usually run by IT colleges though.. and applied for through CAO.

Hey Rob

Getting the grant depends on a lot of different things...first off have you ever been in college before?......if not you could be entitlted to the grant.....this is means tested...depending on the course you have applied for it will also determine who to apply for.....Level 6 & 7 courses are applied to your Local VEC and level 8 to the local council.......Application forms come out in june july each year and have to be in before the 31stof august.......Just before xmas the goverment decdied that fees would not be introduced......so we still have free college education. Once you know weither you are accepted to your course then go about your grant application....AS you are only 22 you do not qualify for mature student staus so you palce will be awarded based on points in your leaving cert.....

As you are employed for the past year you are more than likely entitled to the back to education allowed......in other words the dole while you are in full time education......but you can no longer get both the grant and the BTE allowance.....as of this year.......ah its a horrible long process and be prepared for the long haul.......

check out for all the info you need and if ya need any more help send me a mail........be warned though rob its a horrible process but well worth it in the end.....hope that was some help

A hotel employee in Killybegs told me the Chef Course is still done the same way but maybe she meant as in placements etc. and not the actual funding. I knew there had been some changes. Sure it was probably way too good to last lol. I was speaking to one of the lecurers recently too and he said the same thing again though he possibly meant the course rather than the funding.wave
