A drunk stagers into the confessional box and says nothing for 5 mins. The priest then decides to knock on the partition wall.

" No use knocking " shouts the drunk.

" There's no paper in this one either "

Here it would matter, as if you are a member of the church, your church taxes goes to them...

If you're not, you don't contribute to them financially...

Why do you have to formally resign from any religion, it is ridiculous, there is a thing called free will. You can make your own decisions and choices in regards to who or what you want to worship. It seems everyone else is telling you what you can or can't be. Decide for yourself and live with your decision.

I did not read everyone's answer, but you must be a very good Catholic to worry about this. Why not just LEAVE? Is there a problem with this? Sorry if I seem so niave. It just seems simple to me, not like some of the other churches. Correct me if I am wrong....

It’s because the church still claims you as one of their own , they still claim to be doing things in your name
