Toyota Ireland says it is trying to find out how many of its vehicles sold in Ireland have faulty accelerator mechanisms.
The company says the models and numbers of potentially affected vehicles should be known by the middle of next week.
The Irish announcement comes after Toyota was last week forced to recall 2.3 million vehicles sold in the US because of reported accelerator problems. Advertisement
The company has now said the recall will be implemented in Europe as well.
Toyota has had 30 reported cases of sticking accelerators across Europe, none of which resulted in accidents.
FriendlyFeline: That's something I have often wondered.
Another thing, what would happen if you switched off the engine while driving?
the steering would lock and ..... well who knows what could happen if the accelerator sticks just hold the clutch and brake, thats all you could do, if its automatic then hope ya have good brakes

As long as your steering lock didn't engage, it would be grand. Just leave it in gear and you'll grind to a halt. Your brakes would be ok for one or two pumps.

crotalus667: it takes alot of over reving ot blow it , plus most cars now have rev limiters
Go out in the morning. Leave your car in neutral and floor the gas. I give you 10 seconds till it runs a big end and 15 before the conrod comes out the side of the engine block!

it is true,,,but its only a small probllem,,,, many car manufactorer's have had to call back models for various reasons,, i dont really see the problem here,,, if it happens,,just ,,,clutch, stop, walk away,,let the engine blow,,though it would probably stay revving for 3 years/100,000 km
