He wrote a masterpiece.
His other work is of little consequence and he stopped publishing.
If he is to be remembered as an all time great it would be on the basis of a single novel.
That's a stretch.
cool

My sentiments exactly. The Catcher In The Rye is a wonderful masterpiece.

But I also feel he cant be remembered as an all time great. Personally I feel he was an incredibly talented author & because of this one novel was probably an influence to other aspiring authors in similar genre's.

It is also difficult to tell whether he only had one major novel in him or if he kept publishing would have produced more works of similar quality

Last nights'news indicated that he left behind a housefull of notebooks and still had a literary agent. There are two children who will have to decide what to do with the material.
For some reason I expect to be disappointed with it.Hope I'm wrong.
cool
Also read today that he had a novel excerpted in The New Yorker years ago which he withdrew from publication. We'll probably see that one,at least. His posthumous work will be worth a fortune to the copyright owners.
Hemingway published two or three novels after his death.
You could tell what was Hemingway and what was patched together by Mary, his last wife--who villified him btw--and the editors at Schribners'.Sad,sad sad.Vultures picking the bones of genius.Let's hope it wont be like that with Salinger.

I doubt it. He published I think only one book about an adolescent going through a breakdown. I know the book was meant to have been read by the likes of Lee Harvey Oswald before the assasination, but I read it myself twice and frankly I didn't see what all the fuss was about! Maybe I'm just not that smart!

Catcher in the Rye is a masterpiece and a cult attitude book for maybe two generations of young people.i wouldnt lessen that book's significanse.
his other work-quote"of little consequence" and not so popular made the difference for me anyway.
short stories are admittedly more difficult to create and he excelled with it-a perfect day for bananafish, for esme-with love and squalor, the laughing man, etc.
what about the glass family, franny and zooey, raise high the roof beam carpenters?brilliant exsamples of modern literature, written so long ago.i do hope to read something more like thatsad flower
