On some level, we're all judged because of our jobs. It's a fact of life. get used to it. If you are a trash collector, people will get a bit sniffy with you. if you are a lawyer, people will try tripping you at the top of the stairs. If you are a fund manager for a big deal bank, most people will want to slip a knife between your ribs.
If western goverments were like their third-world counterparts, they would simply say, regarding the hostages, "Go ahead - kill 'em...see if we care". Unfortunately, western goverments cannot use those sort of tactics for, I guess, legal/political reasons.
So how about going in to Somalia, and setting up a whole armada of young dudes in high-speed boats, armed to the teeth, and pay them really good salaries to wipe out the pirates. With each hostage-taking event, their bonuses get chopped. Make a business out of it. Still cheaper than paying ransoms.
I simply don't get it. Shipping companies and goverments have paid millions in ransom. You'd think a small team of guys with the right weapons on each boat would be a much cheaper alternative. Also, if Somalia is a failed state, what's to stop putting some serious firepower in boats, chasing these guys to ground, even inland if necessary, screw sovereignty, and wipe them out one after the other? it wouldn't take too many successful examples to make these guys go back to fishing for a living. I just don't get it.
Israel has revealed it has disciplined two top army officers for using white phosphorus shells during an attack on a UN compound in Gaza last year.
Political issues aside, how can any goverment/military justify using weapons like this, especially against an enemy that is essentially a sitting duck? So now 2 officers will get the chop...big deal, they are just the fall guys. The real criminals are still sitting in power. Same old, same old.
