Florence & the machine are on Island, which is owned bu Def Jam, which is owned by Universal.

The Artic Monkeys are on Domino which is owned by EMI.

Kasabian are on RCA / Columbia.

Don't think any real Indie labels exist anymore to be honest which is a real pity. crying

Actually there are lots of indie labels...there always has been.

quick google search gave me this:

However during the late 80s and the nineties a lot of major labels bought independant labels in order to try an monopilise the alternative music market. A good example would be EMI buying Mute records which in itself had a smaller label called blast first which released material by sonic youth. (mute records released stuff by Depeche Mode...probably there biggest act).

4AD is an independant label however it uses distribution by major labels outside the UK so could be argued that it is not strictly indie.

You can easily look up Wiki for information on Independant labels.

Personally I agree with Keenland that none of the above bands are "indie" as to me its not a genre but has its roots in punk/ alternative/DIY music and ideology.

Some of my favourite independant bands at the moment are

Windings
Lightning bolt
Hope is noise
Jesu
Nadja

Too me these are all "indie" acts as in have no connections to major labels...DIY or die
