However during the late 80s and the nineties a lot of major labels bought independant labels in order to try an monopilise the alternative music market. A good example would be EMI buying Mute records which in itself had a smaller label called blast first which released material by sonic youth. (mute records released stuff by Depeche Mode...probably there biggest act).
4AD is an independant label however it uses distribution by major labels outside the UK so could be argued that it is not strictly indie.

Personally I agree with Keenland that none of the above bands are "indie" as to me its not a genre but has its roots in punk/ alternative/DIY music and ideology.
Some of my favourite independant bands at the moment are
Windings Lightning bolt Hope is noise Jesu Nadja
Too me these are all "indie" acts as in have no connections to major labels...DIY or die
