NEW DELHI (Reuters Life!) – When Bhoopnarayan Jha lost his leg in an accident, the government employee also lost his will to live, until he got a "Jaipur Foot".

Made from locally available and cheap materials, the rapid-fit, prosthetic limb is handed over for free to victims of road and rail accidents or landmine blasts, giving them, and thousands of others who can ill-afford a major injury or the costs of rehabilitation, a new lease on life.

Same thing exactly happened in Kenya over 30 years ago when I worked there. They were made in our workshops to suit African children because there were not any black prosthetics back then, and we had a load of amputees from snake bites, Idi Amin's Uganda, where his soldiers used to reach for children by the arms or legs and just hack of the limbs and leave them to die, and from other horrors too gruesome to mention. Our workshops did an unbelievable job back then and gave all the prosthetics away for free too, covered by charitable donations.
