I was driving around Wicklow yesterday and I saw a massive bird flying above the N11, it had a forked tail, a band of black around its wing and the edges of its wings went up at right angles, anyidea what it was? I tried to look up birdwatch ireland but all the photos are of perched birds

Sounds like you were lucky enough to have seen a red kite, google it and see if the flight photo is the same as the bird you saw.

massive bird you say? only massive bird I can think of is the Grey Heron, very common in ireland but your description doesnt match with their appearance,
from the wing patterns I would say its a Buzzard, they are making a comeback in Ireland in recent years, a beautiful bird in its own right, google common buzzard I think and you should see photos of their plumage in flight
