Secondary thought, I believe you may have come across it in a Mark Twain book, it sounds familiar to me and we were forced to read a ton of those in advanced lit.
At least you have a sense of humor! Yes, I just did a bit of net research, and it said that oldschool use of it was 'would rather' - it does however show a bit more data with that in what they'd call normal usage.

I was confirming what I remembered, and confirmed that his too was also acceptable. If it were a battle of wits, it wouldn't be with definitions of words Jax :P
