I work in a Catholic Diocese office here. Im not particulary RC and grew up in a multi-denominational family. But its a good job, and the people are great.

However...I cannot abide the expense that I see that is spent on the Churches around here, the Bishop's Residence, etc, etc. As much as I respect them all, I feel very uncomfortable about the amount of money I see used in the Name of the Church.

To make matters more difficult for me, I work in the Development Office for the Bishop's Fund. Raising MORE money!doh

I have days when I have a crisis of conscience, when I see the poverty that arises in other areas of life.

dunno

Hey Dodge ... there seems to be very few controls on expenditure within the church ... no expense spared and when you realise that a percentage reduction, would have a huge impact and not a token impact on people's lives, it would be very hard not have the old crisis every now and again ... can you influence policies in any way or make suggestions?

Hi Skinny..wave

Well, no. I guess we have no control over these things. Thats why I have a crisis in my thinking sometimes. Im not a non-believer, but I do feel uncomfortable about the amount of money spent on religious effects and buildings and cowering down to the clerics that goes on.

Doesnt balance out with the way things are in the modern world, to me. Especially in this economy..

May I suggest you go to confession with one of the priests, telling him how you are "robbing" (for want of a better term) the poor on behalf of the Church?

Oh, DodgeBabe, I don't envy you blues And I can well understand your "crisis of conscience". Especially if one bears in mind that the Catholic Church is the richest institution and the Vatican the richest state on earth.

Even though I'm not a Christian myself, I often wondered if that was what Jesus had in mind confused I seem to recall something along the lines of "to give is better than to take"... I apologize for the bad translation, I don't know the English words from the bible.

Hi Feline..

Yep, you got it.thumbs up

I was thinking about this the other break time, when I was skulking outside the pristine Diocese offices smoking my cigarette.uh oh

The Bishop, whose residence is next door to where I work, has a huge house, a driver, a housekeeper, countless cleaners, a secretary and many minions employed to do his bidding, no doubt. He's a lovely guy, very down to earth, but I feel slightly resentful every time I meet him.

Its a strange feeling..dunno wave

I'm not going to go on a rant here (even though I feel a "holy wrath" coming in each time I think about it), but looking back in history, I cannot honestly say the catholic church has done much good. The female discrimination alone is enough to get my blood boiling. I mean, how DARE they tell us that women cannot do the same jobs in religious service as men??? Oh, don't get me started!

I'm reading a very interesting book at the moment. "The serpent and the goddess" by Mary Condren. It was "forbidden" in Ireland for the longest time, by the way. I can highly recommend it, a real eye opener regarding the start and development of male domination in the catholic church, and especially in Ireland.

Not a strange feeling, Dodge.... but your economic situation is dependant on having a job with them at the moment ... difficult one to call ... come to Ireland and we will love you and look after you .....

Yes, I feel the same sometimes!laugh

Get this: I was told by my work colleague that I was "not allowed" to go outside at my break to have a cigarette by the Monseigneur. I wasnt happy at all.

Finally, I got "permission", but still felt like he was treating me like a school girl.mumbling

Very male dominated, to be sure.wine

laugh Will bear that in mind!

I love my job, dont get me wrong. It involves alot of charity work and raising funds for the homeless and families in need, so I guess that salves my conscience enough!

DodgeBabe: Wow, there, Lady! Watch your blood pressure!

All the ladies are lovely, and very kind, and I dont have much contact with the Lofty Bods. The Bishop is great, very cool, jogs every day and is very taken with me being somewhat Irish! Half the employees there are either Irish or part Irish decent so I fit in great!

Its just a little archaic in there sometimes. Im a bit more of a free spirit than they are used to, I think.

Bet they would roast me on a pyre! They still don't like witches, I hear laugh Too much wisdom and power in a woman doesn't sit well with them.

But.... let me not say or do bad against anybody. The threefold law works well without my interfering angel

I would tend to agree with alot of what you say, Sir. But I am staying out of the hardline religious politics.
