When my son's mom goes off to work she sometimes get different relatives of her's to go off and work, always some people who are single parents as well and she occasionally minds the kids of a couple of friends of her who are single parents as well. She does beleive in old fashioned self reliance and getting yourself up by the bootstraps just like I do as well, its a shame a lot more Irish people didn't have the same attitude, instead the attitude of a lot of permanently poor people is to always seek assistance off the state and take no responsibilities in return.

not everyone has relatives to fall back on for childcare I wonder if that was your exes case would she be able to afford for professional childcare?And would you then put her in the lazy single mother bracket?I think its unfair of you to make general statements about single mothers and also you forget their are dads out there on their own who have their kids 24/7

people who have never worked should be encouraged to go out and retrain maybe even have to enroll on a course etc to qualify for the dole.Thers is loads of ce schemes out there with fas but the down fall is you do not always come away from there with full qualifications which again leaves people in a swings and roundabouts situation I myself would like many quite happily clean loos etc whatever it takes to put food on the table and pay the bills.But even now those jobs arent on offer

Agreed not everyone has relatives but a lot of self reliance can go a long way to overcoming these difficulties, also agree that there are dads who mind their kids 24/7, I'm sure there are plenty on this site. Some single parents have gone as far as to advertise in local papers saying that they are willing to chilminding services on a rotational basis, to me thats a agreat example of self reliance which needs to be encourages in this country but no this is Ireland and a significant minority of people always expect the state to intervene. Nothing wrong with a bit of old fashioned American style self reliance been implemented in this country.

The pity me types who whinge and moan about not having a job, really they are delighted to be on the dole and doing nothing, sure they can sleep in until midday and hang around all day doing nothing suits them down to the ground

Agreed I have a few friends who have gone back to college or to retrain, I firmly belive that life is for the flexible and not the infelxible who are stuck in their ways.

The country needs more people like yourself with such a healthy attitude to life and you aare prepared to be flexible and learn new skills, that waster you mentioned who has never worked should have his welfare frozen, he probably gets his rent paid for by the state if he's in private accomadtion.

I`ll never end up on the dole, I`m resourceful and will find paid employment anywhere, I`ll turn my hand to anything, I would scrub dirty toilets if I was getting paid for it, unlike some irish I wouldnt be too proud to take a menial job like that

I fully agree, my unemployed friends are on the net for hours lokking for jobs, applying for jobs, ringing up companies and going into offices or places of businesses looking for work, one of my friends was laid off as an accountant last year and is now working in Tescos stacking shelves.
