One of the worst things about the celtic tiger was the fact that a huge level of job snobbery existed amongst a lot of Irish people who were too stuck up their arses anout working in certain jobs, I'm glad to see that this snobbery is gradually been eroded, mind you it still exists amongst a significant minority who would refuse to work in Lidl or work in a fast food restaurant.

well im getting my rent paid at the mo i had to fight for that with a Td because the wouldnt give it to me and i worked all my life and paid my stamps. but i do have to put half my money torward it and i pay maintence yet a traveler family down in wexford were getting a totally of 1400 euro a month on rent free allowance and they wrecked the place now that really pisses me off

Fair play to you for fighting your corner and making sure you got your rent paid for, you really have to fight your corner in this world, €1400 a month in rent allowance in Co Wexford, how many kids did they have, I know the travellers like to breed kids like confetti at a wedding

I know some single parents who only have to pay €24 a week in rent. The rent allownace virtually covers the rent.

I know of a single mother who lives in a three bedroom house who gets rent allowance, she pays 30 euro a week and the rent allowance covers the rest, single mothers really have it hard

Not if she's worked all her life while bringing up a kid at the same time and then lost her job.

It's a good job you don't decide who gets allowances for this country. People have different circumstances. When a man leaves the wife and kids behind to fend for themselves, it's not like they can afford childcare to go out to this full-time job you speak of (if such things even exist a the moment). Relatives aren't always an option but if people like you were in power, either the kids would get taken off them or they'd get no money.

I do believe in a welfare state for people who have lost their jobs but I don't believe welfare should be a form of permanent addiction, America before the mid 90's used to have huge problems with getting single parents back to work but then quite a bit of tough love legislation was brought in in 1996 and before the recssion in 2007 over 65% of single parents were in full time employment. There's far too much of a bleeding heart do gooder mentality in this country and sometime tough love is whats required.
