Hi guys,
id just like peoples opinion on what sort of self defence classes or something along those lines would be advisable for a 10 year old boy.
I worry about my son. sometimes he,s nervous about even going to the local shop with big fella,s around waiting to bully the younger kids etc.
Id like him to have a bit more self confidence to be able to stand up for himself.

someone suggested kick boxing r something along those lines?wave

Kick boxing is ok, I've done the Thai version, muay Thai.
Kickboxing is generally used for fitness these days and isn't too violent. Would recomment Muay Thai for a 10 year old. It's a bit too violent.
Maybe a Karate class? Teaches a lot of discipline and self defense rather than straightforward ATTCAK.

same with tai kwon do !!! and they are very popular so you would have no problems finding a class , they would help build his confidence too !!!

.

thanks. id prefer him to be able to talk his way out of things first but the guys around here dont do that type of thing.
iv always told him never to hit anyone or hurt anyone but now he,s not really able to stick up for himself. its hard to raise kids to do the right thing these days when their up against these kinds of thugs

Depends on the type. Krav Maga and Muay Thai mostly teach you to take a hit and then batter them senseless. The likes of Katate and Tae Kwon Do teach you to parry the hits and take advantage. Bit better for a child to learn.

but what im saying is in every style you learn self defence now
everyone teaches self defence cause thats why a lot of peeps do martial arts so they can defend themselves
i think its a standard thing
i knoiw when i did taekwondo most of the self defence we did was common sense like running first and if ya cant run .........
well then ya defend yerself

Unfortunately, that'll be the case no matter what. I've done my fair share of self defense but if there was more than 2 lads, I'm still up for a beating. dunno
All you can do is teach him to take care of himself. The thing is to make sure he knows to only use it to defend himself from a lot of harm or, as my dad taught me, if it's to help someine else.
Golden rule though: It does not make you invincible. You can always end up against more lads who will fight dirty or just will only fight when they're outnumbered.
The last fight I got in when I was in town, I just got him to the ground and told him to calm down. Next thing I know, he was running off to et his mates shouting that I'll be sorry. Empty threat maybe but I still legged it. Better to move sometimes than see if a bad situation happens.

Ah yeah. I get your drift. Still wouldn't go straight into the violent ones first. Better to learn the basics of defense and running and control. Then learn how to batter them when you have some self control. I don't think there's anything worse than a kid who learns how to hurt people without learning how to respect them first.

yea your dead right. once he gets a bit of confidence in himself to be able to stand up to them that,l be a big hurdle for him. i dont wanna have to keep going out to these guys cos then they.l take it out on him and pick on him for being a mummys boy. i want him to be able to do it for himself
