dunno if these can be qualified to be called love: there's love=talking to you, you're a good companion love=i'm loyal, you're my one and only, love=i care about you and what happens to you, love=i respect your decisions love=i only care about the now, who cares where you've been or where you're going love=i'm yours, you can have your way with me love=you're always on my mind, no matter where you are

joyannie: So you have loved each one differently? Therefore to varing degrees?
I have. I believe as we get older, wiser and grow we re-define who we are and what love is to us. The boy I dated in my 20's, I loved, but in my late 30's I wouldn't. As we evolve so does love.

So with experience having loved more than one person, our capacity to love changes. Possibly the way we love does too. But should it really be characterized as degrees of love?

Hmmm..not sure. I do know that I love my friends and family but if I had to choose which one I loved more..it would be family. We are capable of loving many things in different ways. I love my friends kids but love my own on a higher degree. I love my dog but not as much as my kids etc.
joyannie: Why do you think this is such a hard subject to quantify? Please understand I find it very difficult, as well.
When is love just love?
It can never be "just love" because there is no such thing. Love is like any emotion and changes in degrees for that who we feel the emotion for. You can love in different degrees, hate in different degrees, be sad in different degrees. It's all in our experiences that depend on which degree we feel anything.

I understand what you are saying regarding family love, parental love etc. But in regard to degrees of love between a man and a woman this is harder to explain. When is love just love?

I like your example about feeling sad to different degrees. That made sense! But using the idea of degrees for love seems to be a form of rating. Or a disclaimer of sorts.
