I was a child of the 80s/90s mostly. But where I grew up, alot of the over protectional parenting was still in it's infantcy. I climbed trees and fell out. ( hell one time I got nicely stuck in one by my ankle and hung there until I eventually managed to wiggle out.. first time I had the breath knocked out of me ) No helmets on bike, and some people still actually had lawn darts. And yes, we played toss it in the air and see who doesn't get hit. Playing until dark, finding random kids and making friends. Eating mud and bugs. ( ate a goldfish on a dare! ) and so far no major damage was ever done. Not saying people should't protect their young, but I think for some, it's become stifling. No wonder so many kids are arrogent yet pansies. Won't go outside for fear of bees and cry when the net loses connection.
Not only all the above you mentioned, but we didn't have all the fast food restaurants that have a bunch of fattening foods, all the soft drinks, the candy, the breads, the desserts, the snacks, and I can go on and on....I'm baffled to even go pick out a tube of toothpaste, there are a multitude to choose from. Life was so simple and uncomplicated, there were a few of this and that, but not to the length we have today...and so easily accessible. If you wanted a special dessert, it was either prepared by someone, or you had it in the restaurant, and you only received one helping. Granted there were a few pies, icecream, popsicles, etc. but for the most part there is too much available to our whims. I used to eat tons of chocolate, and while I still like a nip here and there, I think over the years I so over indulged it gave me migraines, so when I stopped eating so much of it, so did the migraines.
You're also right about the exercise and play, I can remember being out til 9:00 p.m. playing hide and seek, running around, we never had to worry about some weirdo, or very little. Our t.v. time was family oriented, we watched good ol Lawrence Welk, Ed Sullivan and the like together, we had family meals together. Now the younger are victims of circumstance in that there isn't the mom that stayed at home and cooked meals, women have to get out and work for the vast majority because they can't stay at home or they're single moms. I was a single mom raising twins, and I never went with any friends until my daughters were 13, I led a sheltered life. But I don't blame women for wanting to get out and get a little crazy or men too, there are so many demands on life today, God, you have to take a break to feel "you" again for a minute or two....so, hats off to all of you young or old, surviving in this age is a serious business, and the values you pass on to your kids....we did eat alot of junk, s'mores, and the like, and we have survived, but I think all the additives and crap that is put in food today, is a crying shame...
Well, I have to say this is more interesting than I had thought.
All of us have started to think back to our youth. We all made it this far and along the way we have lost good friends and family. We have suvived beyond those crazy years. I was asked just last week about something that happened in the early 70's, I laughed and said "sorry, I went from 1968 to 1974, every thing in between was either booze induced or involved mariquina"
I have told my kids that the good die young, and yes your old man is going to live a long time.
(I should try to remember who is going to pick out the old age home,,,,,,,,,,,,now who did I put in charge of that)
Yep, I did all of those things, including the go-cart my brother made from a lawnmower motor. Oh, and there were not many allergies, I think because we got exposed to everything AND we were rarely sick. Our meds consisted of aspirin, mentholatom, iodine, baking soda and calamine lotion. Oh and vinegar for sun burns. We never heard of SPF's. We swam in ponds, and smoked grape vines. Gosh! I'm still alive.
