Cosmopolitan comes from a Greek phrase meaning: "citizen of the world." It's come to mean a women's magazine, a famous drink and a person who jets about the world not being responsible or accountable to any of the countries they visit.
According to authors Brookes and Appiah, cosmopolitanism is about global concern: a theory that we are all responsible for the human community. It is not about seeking to impose values on others - in fact, the true cosmopolitan understands that people won't always agree on many things.
There are 2 basic premises for cosmopolitanism:
1. Everybody matters in the world. Each person is entitled to seek a life of significance and dignity.
2. Basic human rights cannot be violated: Cosmopolitans cannot be tolerant of people who think that it's okay to treat people anywhere in the world without dignity or respect.
