I was reading some of the older threads and came across this one (http://www.connectingsingles.com/forum_12_160813_1/mental_illness_whats_your_view_on_these_people.htm) Mental illness whats your view on it?

Got me thinking

1/ If I was dating some on who had a mental illness/ disability would I

(a) date someone who suffered with a mental illness/disbility but they never told me and later had to either deal with the heart ache of a possible break up because of it (assume if they didnt tell me they had one they may not be willing to discuss problems or issues that may arise later on)

(b) Date some one who had a mental illness and told me early in the relationship and any possible quirks they may have. Some mental illnesses are very easy to live with once managed correctly and people are aware of possible traits ie: OCD (to a degree), Depression (being aware of the warning signs and ensuring that partner is understanding enough to possibly help when "low"), missing a limb, mute, deaf etc (I dont know alot about the wide spectrum of either mental illnesses or disabilities)

2/ If I had a mental illness/disabilty would I tell someone i am dating?

That I am not sure! how would I approach it? when should you tell?
We all have quirks and telling details on here like I smoke, drink occasionally I would sketch on what every would stay still long enough, i am tall and would be a orange crayon i am willing to disclose this so would i be willing to disclose having a mental illness/disability?

So what do you think?

2. Yes, I'd be inclined to let the person know up front.

I would want to know up front. Likewise I would be upfront.

How upfront is it good to be though? I don't think many people would be happy chatting about mental illness before meeting with someone a few times. Or would it be better to find out/tell before meeting someone at all? dunno When would be the optimum time for admissions like that?

I'd need to know as early as possible. Possibly from the get go.

But someone would want to trust you to impart that sort of information, wouldn't they? I certainly wouldn't expect to find out anything so intimate as a mental illness in the first or 2nd mail.

I get what you are saying LBA but I'd want to know very early on. That's just me though, I'm sure others are different.

Also I don't get the having to trust someone to tell them, mental illness is not a taboo, we as a society need to lift the veil of secrecy around it. Mental illness covers a whole range of illnesses too, so it could be mild depression to full blown psychosis.

It's like the kids thing, when do you tell someone you have kids, from the first hello or after 10 months of stuffing them gagged in the attic?!

I guess I'm an up front kinda person!

I would agree that it's better in the long run to be upfront but it's not always straightforward for people. Even though society is trying to lift the taboos surrounding mental illness, there are still areas where it isn't easy for people to be so forthcoming about these things. As a sufferer of depression, I was once taunted about it online (on another site) by a man I had told on a first date. I still have no issue about telling people of my depression but there are more vulnerable people out there who may not be able to deal with that and will want to trust the person before telling them.

However, if anyone had a problem with my having kids they could go and take a jump tongue After all, I can't imagine my lot staying quiet in the attic even if they were gagged and bound and stuffed into suitcases laugh
