kizzy27: 41 houses burnt to the ground ... omg seriously tragic !!!

witnessed alot of grief, family's, couple's not knowing if their house's had perished, it'll be atleast 2 days before they're allowed to go back in to see if they're house went down. Some are still in their house's, they've been told to prepare for 'passage of fire'...i live in the bush, about 10kms away, the wind, the way it's been has been unpredictable, people are very alert here right now...firefighter's have come over from victoria, they've all done a great job, no live's lost BUT i know there were alot of animals left behind it came on so suddenly :(

Sadley our country is not getting off to a good 2011 , is it a lead up to something globally bigger , the snow blizzards in the usa , the big freeze in europe all our weather events , flooding , cyclones fires ,is our planet on the verge of some colosal climate upheaval ,Did the mayans have a sniff of something we are yet to discover?Perhaps blues

I don't believe in climate change.
Whole societies were wiped out by climatic events like the ones we're going through in the past.
These are just periodic paterns that happen every 50, 100, 200 years.
Maybe the volcanos had something to do with it up in Iceland.
Years ago we had Krakatoa and Pompei which blocked out the sun and years ago we never had the levels of man made pollution.

I agree NG... throughout history things have changed due to climate changes.. the ice age.. countries and islands formed and disappeared due to earth shifts .. the grand canyon and other things like that have been formed due to weather patterns such as floods and volcanoes and earthquakes... a myriad of reasons that are all usual and normal things throughout history

people need to not jump to conclusions and blame things like the mayan calender/ predictions.. or because their god is pissed off or whatever reasons human beings tend to use roll eyes

No one can deny our climate is changing.summers are hotter, winters are colder .The fact that we are cutting down trees that supply us , humans with the air we need to breathe !!! In highly developed mainly western countries up to 90% of all forest has disappeared to urbanization and agriculture, with many other areas having followed suit with figures nearly as high at 80%+. In total 80% of the worlds forest has been cleared or compromised by human development.
Humans have changed planet earth. One of our accomplishments is to extract and burn much of the fossil fuel deposits on the planet. We have increased the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and are now observing the changes in weather patterns and climate that are a result of our actions.
The effects of this deforestation and climate change are felt worldwide though particularly in very cold polar and low-lying areas susceptible to flooding. These effects include extreme weather, flooding, and drought as well as warming leading to environmental change. Climate change is expected to get much worse and pick up pace and those species who can't adapt including ourselves face extinction.

We need to call a halt to this development and expansion and make room for nature that is essential for our survival as if we don't change and adapt now we are likely to survive much further into the future.

I agree there has been natural events in the past but to seriously believe we as a species are having no effect on our over crowded polluted planet is just stupid !
