I tried bleach today (maybe because of material as did work on other top) and didn't work either and was going to try Kizzy's suggestion of Exit Mould but didn't get to supermarket
but
I did mix up a shock dose of chorline for the pool and took the risk and soaked it in bucket for 1/2 an hour
and
yippee, it worked 
and I have a pure white cotton cardie again
