And in real life, you will get shunned by most if you have a vile tongue constantly engaged in gossip, rumors and maligning others.
On the internet, however, there seems to be a lot more tolerance for hate speech and maligning of groups of people and the pursuit of all manner of bigoted agendas. But is that really so?
Is hate speech more common on the internet than real life?
If so, why?
I am inclined to believe it is but am not sure. And if I were to propose a "why", I would explain it with the cloak of anonymity and lack of peer pressure levied against those that lack decency.
Of course, I expect there to be a number of different opinions and I'm posting this because if you want to share yours, I want to hear it. This was a compilation of perception and assumption followed by a conditional theory, not a statement of fact, so I'll probably do more reading than posting. I'll assume any subsequent personal potshots are just someone's tongue-in-cheek way of agreeing with me that maligning of others is popular sport in the less-than-civilized domain of our beloved interwebz. :)
