Go to skype site and create an account for yourself then follow the guidance to check sound and image settings etc
Then add your friends "skype" name to list of contacts. When they are online it shows and you can call them.
If the sound card on your comp is not very good you might better off buying a set of headphones with a mic to improve quality of sound when you are chatting

some very good comments on here- also want to add that skype has tutorials buiit on that can show you how to use it- great tool - i have a cell phone but i live in a "dead zone" and skype is 2.99 a month for us calls a month or can buy skype credits- international is higher per month - but a lot cheaper than cell company rates- good luck!
