We never dream that someday we will actually be "old" of pensionable age nor do we think that we may need help with out care. We tend to put off thoughts about this, instead living in the now and here. Should we think more as a society about how we treat "us" the ageing population?

A great number of tax paying citizens have paid for long term health care fees that should have been paid by the NHS. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of families and tens of billions of pounds sterling!

Governments and NHS have continued to evade paying for the majority of patients in Care Homes. This is despite criticism by the Ombudsman, the Royal College of Nursing, and the Law Society. The last Government employed delaying tactics of consultation on a new "National Framework". These new rules were criticised by the Law Society, since they did not include a simple "Coughlan Test". i.e. comparison of the patient's care needs with those of Ms Coughlan. Instead, these deliberately vague rules were put in place in late 2008, and - of course - result in the majority of patients being denied Continuing Care - to which they are entitled under the Law.

NHS Continuing care funding should be available for those whose primary need is health care. We only ask that the NHS, Social Services and the Government obey the law.

I think they should sell their homes and spend all their money before they get old and infirm. In fact I know a few people who have done this in real life.
