Glengirl: Ok folks, we all give out about this little country of ours, but I think (hope) that underneath it all we are all proud to be Irish.

What thing, event, person.....or whatever, makes your heart swell and say "I'm so proud to be Irish"?

Mine has to be:

Croke Park
Riverdance
The Committments

what makes me proud to be irish is that we created an identity for ourselves in an atmosphere of oppression, that there was always a small few that craved independence even though the vast majority toiled happily under foreign rule for hundreds of years, that out of such oppression the greatest organization on earth was born(the gaa) i think the gaa was the key in giving us a national identity, it set us apart from the rest, and even since partition it has continued to give a sense of identity and pride to those in the 6 counties, without the gaa we would be no different to any other region of the uk

Glengirl: I agree with you on that one, as soon as we leave our country, we stand 10ft tall. It's a shame we can't feel the same when we are at home because, we really are the business

What I love about Fr Ted is that it portrays what alot of Irish people think of the catholic church. If any other country produced a programme like that though, we would be up in arms about it rolling on the floor laughing

I have to agree, I never quite 'got' Father Ted. I guess where I grew up Catholics were a minority whereas in Ireland it was such a huge part of everyday life and to see it ridiculed like that on tv must have been hilarious.
So I understand why the Irish love it, my housemate always had to explain things to me when we watched it like how the preists used to share houses and they always had a woman servant to run after them to the point of even repairing roofs etc

Just before last christmas. It was a 6 part series with Mary McAleese and a few others. The hot tip was Bono but I was glad it wasn't him. It was quite an interesting program.
People voted over a 6 week period and Michael Collins was the outright winner.

Some stupid poll that RTE did a couple of months back.

The choices weren't great to be honest.....
