tallman51: Just before last christmas. It was a 6 part series with Mary McAleese and a few others. The hot tip was Bono but I was glad it wasn't him. It was quite an interesting program.
People voted over a 6 week period and Michael Collins was the outright winner.
i thought john hume got that in the end

A good analysis. Don't get me wrong,I despise Bob Geldof too, but he does seem a little more sincere than that other vomit inducing fraud. Bono is an all merciful hypocrite. The way he claims to be from Ballymun, when it was really more Glasnevin, juswt to appear more working class really grinds my gears too.

He did, that's why I asked what poll they saw. Tallman obviously picked it up wrong.

Incidentally, Michael Collins wasn't fit to lace Tom Barry's boots.

L1977C: we're always welcome when we go abroad and we're known as one of thre friendliest countries

That is true the Irish people are always welcomed and loved where ever they go in the world, because they are known to be one of the friendliest countries in the world. But i don't think that is really true, cus being friendly is just an individual differences, so being friendly is who you choose to be, it has nothing to do with being Irish because if it has to do with being irish 80% of the irish people would be friendly.

I find people from Cork very friendly, then the few people i have mixed with while living in dublin are friendly. Been to a couple of other counties and they are not friendly at all even in galway where i live right now or aren't people from that county irish.. So you can see that being friendly has nothing to do with being an Irish. JMO

I think you are mixed up there Tallman. Michael Collins didn't win that, John Hume did.

larsvegas: you laugh at each other! It is still difficult to me to identify what is a joke and what not. Sometimes it seems you use 'joking' to tell other people exactly what you think of them. It is a bit complicated if you are not from here!

You are right vegas, but i want you to know that its no joke. They are indirectly telling you what they think of you, so they say it jokingly so you don't see them as not being friendly.

Unfortunately true,, the good old Irish slagging can be taken too far by some people and used as a deadly weapon to hurt other people.

Glengirl: Ok folks, we all give out about this little country of ours, but I think (hope) that underneath it all we are all proud to be Irish.

What thing, event, person.....or whatever, makes your heart swell and say "I'm so proud to be Irish"?

Mine has to be:

Croke Park
Riverdance
The Committments

With all the financial scandals coming out, the previous governments lack of regard for the people, the lack of protest from us normal citizans, the greed shown by a lot of us ov er many years, the state of the healthcare after years of neglect. I am finding it hard to be Irish nowadays. I think we took our eye off what makes us Irish. We were more worried about making as much money as possible and forgot about our less fortunate neighbours who the Celtic Tiger passed by.

I find that statement proud to be Irish pretty meaninless. Its just a feel good slap in the back to ourselves. Ask anybody from any other country and they are probably proud of where they came from too. This statement creates the illusion of a patriotic person without having to do anything to show that. That whole greatest Irishperson series made me cringe at some of the people that made the cut and some that were excluded. I find in life that Irish people can be contraditory. Proud of the leaders who started the push for Irish Independence 1916-1922 yet condem those who tried to extend that to the six counties 1969-1997.
As for the Americans being proud to be Irish, most of them havent a clue where their folks in Ireland came from and have a gombeen view of Ireland. I find that a lot of people could care less about being any race so long as their weekly stream of money keeps on flowing regardless of the consequences for the country. I find it sad that we dont pull our weight in europe when it comes to military matters yet we want the economic benifits and political clout but let the others have responsibility for European defence.
Its sad that we allow the elites in Irish Society hoodwink us into thinking that our system of goverment is not broken.
As a private sector self employed person I resent the way that every last penny is squeezed out of me. Im upset that the people who have the most inititive are the most punished financially in Ireland.
Not one public service worker was made redundant since the recession came to Ireland yet 1.2 million euros has been added to the dept because of incremental payments to the public sector in that time.
I was once proud to be Irish but am not proud now because of how selfish the Irish people have become.

Good post in fairness. Though I would'nt agree with your stance on the public sector obviously.
