JohnnyT: Jaysus, I don't know if people on the dole could afford 60 euro a week on maintenance!! Surely maintenance should be cut during periods of unemployment....

While I was unemployed I found it very hard to pay anything to my little mans mother. I did my best and would throw her a hundred, fifty or even two hundred if I had it but at the end of the day I'd to cover his costs 3 days a week, rent to pay, food, car, etc...

Personally speaking.... I kept a record of the amount I owed her. She is sound enough and allowed a little debt forgiveness and I paid her a fairly sizable sum once I got myself sorted. But that's just me personally and I think it'd be unfair to force people on welfare to pay maintenance.

you say you think its unfair to force people on welfare to pay maintenance??i have a wee man whos dad is on the dole and he pays 30e a week, its not much but my son and i would be in a much worse position without it.. a child is the responsibility of two adults and two adults should contribute to their upbringing..

Hmmn, well just for clarity...

I pay a hell of a lot more than 30 euro a week. That's me, personally and no financial circumstances would change that. If I've no income for a period, I'll owe it. This will be the likely situation considering I'm now self employed.

But lets just take his mothers income into account.... She is on welfare. She receives the following

1) Standard welfare
2) Single parent allowance (only applicable to one parent regardless of how much time the child spends with the other)
3) Rent allowance
4) Child Benefit

Meanwhile... for the 4 month period I was unemployed... I was on 188 a week. No increase for child. Don't believe in rent allowance. And child benefit is always paid to the mother because of our feministic legal system! grin

biggles90000: I think they are been means tested now but every dad should be made to pay for hes child i pay 60 euro a week for my little lad and im unemployed to be honest every man should stand up to hes responsibility's hen he as a child and help to maintain them you get these guys who can afford to drink in the pub all day on the dole and some of these guys have familys its not on.
i agree absentee dads should have to pay up, i don't pay a penny for my son to his mother, he stays with me half the week and i cover all his costs when with me so i don't see why i should have to cover for the other half of the week we split all costs 5050

i know this is odd to ask on this topic but if the father was the one looking after the kid does the woman have to pay child support?

It would, however under Irish law the mother is the "De facto guardian" and when unmarried, rarely without consent, get joint custody let alone joint physical custody...... In a recent study carried out in the family courts, in 500 cases heard in the circuit court.... 1 man got physical custody of the children, and 1 other recieved maintenance from the mother.... That equates to 0.2% of men with their kids living with them post break up......
