Ladefoss23: 3,500,000 CHILDREN IN UK, live in absolute poverty
Sadly it is a worldwide problem...
If you want to know what child poverty looks like in Germany, do not go onto the streets; go into homes, into living rooms and talk to people like the Thiel family. Twelve-year-old Jasmin Thiel and her twin brother Florian do not look poor. They have a DVD player and a colour TV. Jasmin is clutching a mobile phone.
If we have problems with our banks, the politicians come together to find a solution very quickly... Nobody comes together to help the children Michael Kruse Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk But they are among the millions in Germany caught in a growing pool of poverty. Much of what this Berlin family owns, from their furniture to their clothes, has been handed out by local charities. The mother Andrea has no partner, no job, and receives a welfare cheque which barely covers the bills. "Once I've paid for rent and for electricity," Ms Thiel explains, "I only have about 200 euros left a month." "I've got to buy all our food with that, plus all the things the kids need for school. We usually run out of money before the month's over."

These are the latest figures,it used to be higher. We are not alone, this is a world wide problem. We are fortunate enough to have a welfare system, even if it is under pressure. There are those in other parts of the world far worse off.

In some cases it's not just children, some pensioners have difficulty managing.Again a world problem I would imagine.

It;s happeing here in Canada too which is why I support programs which feed children breakfast in schools. So many were going to school hungry that it affected how they performed in school. It's hard to concentrate when you are having stomach pains.
What I also like about this program is that it is open to everyone so as to not have any children pointed out as the poor ones.My nephew would take advantage of this program every morning and his parents are far from poor.

Just a thought folks, where is the OP???? H e posted the thread pointedly at the UK. Then when it was pointed oiut it is really a worldwide problem.....He disappears...Not that it is a bad subject we should shout out against child poverty but sadly every country has it and the Governments all hide, ignore or just hope it will go away..It won't we need action and action by all....
GreenStein: That being said, there comes a time when people need to be responsible and take care of themselves. Government is there to assist, not support.
That's the whole thing in a nut shell our government isn't even assisting. It too darn busy sticking it's nose in other countries business.

Assist the Wall St bankers, the Military Industrial Complex, the FED, Pharma, the IMF... and whatever other lobbyists have the deepest pockets??????
Now they are attacking; teachers, local governments, social security, schools, colleges, medicare, daycare, the firemen, paramedics and garbage collectors.
Yeah damn right, people take care of yourselves... while prices double and you haven't got a job... or health insurance.
Well I certainly see exactly who the US government is Assisting AND Supporting... and it's not the other 90% of it's citizens.
You're telling me you don't see a damn thing wrong with that picture?
