Hello I am fairly new to this site, Enjoy the forums, blogs and puzzles,
My question, I am a widow with one child who lives very far away, Irish by birth ,still have family there, I find that now I am alone I want to relocate, Do not particularly want to live in Ireland mainly due to weather and cost of living, thinking about Liverpool as I still have friends there, but again cost of living and weather. I have been told that Europe (mainland Europe) still has a relatively cheap cost of living, but have been unable to verify anything regarding this, To all you members out there who live in France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, I would appreciate some information
1) renting vs, buying,
2) everyday expenses, groceries, cleaning materials, etc etc,
3)cost of a nice meal out
4)Is it necessary to have a car, or is public transportation an option
5) social life,
6) How hard is to make new friends, I know this really depends on me, but would appreciate some info on activities, etc etc,
7) pets? If I was renting am I allowed pets,
8) Are apartments or flats usually furnished?

Again I thank you all for any input you can give me, Nancy

1) it's a buyer's market at the moment. If you can afford it, do it.
2) depends what part of what country. Ireland is more expensive than the rest of the world but if you're savvy for good deals, you can usually get what you want.
3) depends where you go. I find an average restaurant (not early bird) with wine can usually be about 40 - 50 each
4) if you're in Dublin, you can certainly live without it. The public transport covers most areas (apart from where I work mumbling ). Anywhere outside the county, it's best to have a car.
5) one of the most expensive parts of living here. Some good pubs and clubs etc but pricey.
6) hard to do in pubs but there's lots of social clubs around and we love in a country where the after-work drinks are a tradition. But, like you said. Depends on you mostly
7) some do, some don't. You have to check that when you get the place.
8) yes but just the basics usually. You may have to buy a few things but bed, sofa tables and basic kitchen stuff is uually supplied but i'd check to make sure. (that's only for renting though)

Hope it helps. Good luck with the decision

a lot of people retire to spain
low cost of living and plenty of sunshine
what i would strongly advise is to move there on tempory basis see how you like europe before commiting yourself like selling up its a big move
