No

1) Our electoral system breeds the worst aspects of parish pump localised politics.
2) Irish people like been told what they WANT to hear from politicians not what they NEED to hear.
3) Irish people generally prefer to vote for the local pisshead over someone who has integrity and sound policies.
4) Irish people are irrational by nature look at the property madness as a prime example.

oh well the truth hurts.

One doesn't win a popularity contest when it comes to telling unpalatable harsh truths that need to be confronted.

I think you need another revolution to introduce a proper republic! The last time, you just seemed to get a new set of masters who were just as unhealthy and self centred as the crowd ye put out. Imagine living in a country where no means no and not let's keep voting till we get the outcome we want.

If FF had been the ruling party in France, Cowen and Co would be hanging from lamp posts in the Champs Elysees! conversing

kennyfromdublin: It was mainly the central bank which was governed by Irish quislings that failed to regulate the banking sector properly, our economic nightmare is based on domestic faults not international.

Its obviously not international but the EU could have stopped it the same way the have regulated many other sectors on this country

The irish central bank and the financial regulators office would have been mainly responsible for lending as regardsd mortgage eligibility and loans for businesses, they didn;t seem to be too bothered when people were taking out mortgages 10 times their salaries.

I read that comment as well and I thought wtf.
Yep we are fit to self govern IMO. Personally I think we are a relatively new country and are still learning. The celtic tiger was completely new for us and because it was new money lots of people, including normal joe's, didnt handle it properly. We paid the exhorbitant prices without thought of tomorrow.

Yes there is/was a lot of corruption, but I honestly think people want more accountability from their politicains and said politicains have got that message. The current financial crisis is a global one albeit we suffer more beause of out Gov handling of same. Groups like the catholic church no longer have the lobby and influence they once had. The other biggest lobby, agriculture, is nearly controlled by the EU.

I think we have all the capabilities here as long as we don't give in to big business and politicains are MADE to be accountable for their actions

ok i am goinf to say yes we are well capable of running our own affairs, many countries go through hard times brought on by bad governance, i would agree with kenny on some of his points but to say that irish people are irrational is wrong we are no different to any other people, only a few year ago gordon brown was saying there will never be a recession again he got it wrong pretty much everyone got it wrong, we do need to change our political system but i very much doubt that the current government will do this
