In response to: For all of you who are divorced now can you imagine still having to be married to your ex's because society, family and religion demanded it??? Aren't you glad that you are living in modern times and not forced to remain in terrible marriages just to satisfy this whole "till death due us part" notion? We need to stop looking at the past through deeply tinted rose colored glasses.
That's right. Marriage must be hard and if something's hard to do then it's not worth doing. So why even try to be a better partner when you can have as many divorces as you like, problem solved.
@ kindheart..well if u live together with someone for some years I know here and in the US it is considered a common law marriage..and when u split same rules apply..so u could get at least one advantage out of getting married..the tax break..plus well if something should happen to u and a decision has to be made about leaving u on live support or pulling the plug..
to maryrachelle..in Islam divorce has been around for 1400 years..marriage is looked at a contract between 2 people and either can dissolve the contract..although mediation is to thought first and if that fails a waiting period of 3 months ..in case of pregnancy..(nutshell explanation) anyway for the rest yes hurray for it..been there, done it uncontested .yessssssss

To be honest with you,if am gatting married shortly,i will focus on my forthcoming marriage, and i will cut off any thought,""if does not work??""
maryrachelle: I hope so too. I believe that the longer we hold off on getting married the better chance it will have.I will be 37 so I think I held off pretty long.Hopefully it will be the only marriage for me as well, but it's good to know that should things go to hell that I am not stuck tied to someone for life.

Some states have outlawed common law marriages. However, for tax purposes, you are declared husband and wife in common law marriage(unless the rules have changed) and can file taxes to get the joint filing tax breaks. I had a common law marriage for 5 years and had to go through a legal divorce. All our taxes were filed jointly throughout our marriage. I believe that the federal tax filing follows the marriage recognition for the state that you live in. Ohio no longer recognizes common law marriages but did many years ago.

I'm not worried.I was just thinking about what people had to go through in the past after talking with my mother.

We have common law marriages here and they are not going anywhere anytime soon.My fiancee and I have been living together long enough now that we are considered common law by the government. If I had anything of any worth he could legally walk off with half.
