scriobhneoir: I think the letter certainly damages his credibility and it makes his campaign untenable because he won't get 4 Local Authorities to support him. However there are a few things to consider.

1.There are other high profile cases of people writing letters on behalf of people charged with very serious offences who have not still gone on to high office. It's not right in my view but it shows a double standard.

2.He acted stupidly, out of love. What he did was deeply wrong and I would never condone it, however I wouldn't rush to condemn him as a person either. We all do stupid things for love,he's not the first and he won't be the last to let his heart rule his head. What he did, while wrong and a slap in the face to the boy in question and his family, was to intervene on behalf of someone who committed an act that Norris himself admitted was utterly wrong. He did not explicitly condone the act, nor did he actually do anything to the boy directly. So some perspectively.

3.While I'm a little sketchy as to when the letter emerged, I'm pretty sure it had previously emerged before Norris decided to run for president. It was resurrected, along with a 10 year old article where fairly innocent remarks by Norris were totally misrepresented, as part of a concerted campaign to stop Ireland having a gay president. It highlights what a primitive little backwater this country still is and makes me utterly ashamed to be Irish.

4. If we lived in a real democracy (which of course we don't) Norris would be able to just collect signatures from the people to run. Then it would be up to the people to decide on election day.

Some very good points thumbs up

Cheers, as I say, not condoning the letter, but something very fishy about the campaign against him.

In response to: Talk of Norris coming back into the race for president..?

Yeah i was thinking the same thing. Not that it makes much difference but apparently it happened years ago. I just find it interesting that it suddenly came out when he was running for president. How come it never came out while he was a senator?confused

There is no question that he was wrong and I'm not condoning either but the timing of it just seemed to me to be very convenient for his opponents.
