Plenty of double bass drum players, quick as hell, but no feel or use of light and shade in there playing... Ive posted a link for Gavin Harrison, who I personally think is the finest drummer at work today, aparantly, so does Bob Fripp of King Crimson, thats why he's got GH working the drums in his band...
It's difficult to compare drummers from different genres because everyone's bound to have a favourite based on whatever they're into. Implying metal drummers are inferior to jazz is unfair, different skill set doesn't make them less skilled.
Surprised nobody's mentioned Ginger Baker yet. I like Grohl, Bonham, Shannon Sahm and Greg Gall but Levon Helm would get my vote for being so multi-talented. I'd have to give an honourable mention to Victor 'Moulty' Moulton for sheer determination though!
