Seems the coalition and Tony Abbott have shot themselves in the foot simply by opposing everything Julia's mob does or tries to do.
We now will no longer have off shore detention and boat people will be placed within communities around Australia.
Labor stated today that potential refugees upon hearing they would be housed in Malaysia have been staying away and that the boat numbers had seen a sharp decrease in numbers.
News to hand has boats loading up and headed to a port near you and we only have the coalition and Tony to thank for knocking back Labor's attempt to get their offshore detention plan up and running.

Hi Daggy, I have a little personal experience in this, since I am a recent immigrant, and I arrived by boat (true it was actually a luxury yacht, and I was the captain - but it was a boat none the less.)

The real problem is the length of time it takes the immigration department to process the visa's. Why does it take two and three years for a visa to be granted? (It took just under two years for mine, and cost nearly $5,000.) The immigration department should know in a couple of weeks at most, if they are going to let someone in, or turf them back to the country they came from.

If the pollies fixed the real problem, there wouldn't be a detention problem...

(ps... with everyone in Melbourne, we may be the only ones on the forumns - we can party!!! banana banana banana )

I'm astounded as to the costs involved, ie: $1 billion for offshore detention a year and $800,000 for onshore.
These figure may balloon now the flood gates have been opened by Tonny Abbott and Co.

Again, if they fixed the real problem - the ammount of time it takes to process a visa application - they could eliminate these costs.
