The tip should be based upon service. The wait person has little control over the quality of food or your choice. The rule of (plarkin) thumb is to always tip at least 15% and 18% if the service was good.
I tip according to the service. I leave anywhere from a penny up to 3 dollars. Only once have I left a penny and that was because the waitress (Friendly's in Exeter) forgot about my order.
Well service is important as well as food, and everything else... i believe if someone waits on you - you should tip them no matter what. Even if a waitress is horrible I will leave her the minimum..! Remember most servers only get $$2.33 per hour.... so their major wages/income are their tips.
She's not the chef. Why should I tip the waitress/waiter on whether or not the food is good? They're lucky to get a tip from me at all, most of them. People these days in the service industry, by and large, have no clue what "service" means.
(As a sidenote, I know that the waitstaff shares their tips...but..if I'm going to give the chef credit for his excellent culinary skills, I'll ask the management to give the tip specfically to the chef. I don't believe in "automatic" gratuity. It's not my responsibility to make up for their lack in salary.)
I have been a server for 17 years at my friends Mexican Restaurant part time...I got better tips than anyone. Reason being? Pay attention to what the customer needs. Give him/her what they need in a timely manner. Use humor and make them relax. That's what they went out for...to relax. If they went out just to eat because of hunger they would have grabbed a burger. Treat people as if your business depended on it...cause guess what? It does!
I tip if sevice is good and if the wait staff performance is done in a professional manner.
Lord knows some can always find a reason not to. Like those that sit and drink coffee for hours and just talk at the counter they are getting fresh refills and actually require more time than the customers who come their to just eat. and they comment I only had coffee....
