A general question people! If u were getting married and booked the priest u wanted for the mass months in advance but found out 5 weeks before ur wedding that he couldn't say the mass. Would this bother you? In my opinion a priest is a priest and there is plenty out there who u could like so why make it sound like its a big deal. To me this doesn't make sense and Is only a small issue where as some make it sound huge when the priest they wanted turns around a few weeks in advance and says he can't do it :)

When i got my son christened I went to a different parish because I wanted a certain priest to do it. For one, he told me it was ok to have a Presbyterian for a godmother and a gay man for a godfather when the one in my parish said there was no way my sister in law could be his godmother.
He also was a family friend and made the christening very personal and intimate.
So I can see why someone would want a particular priest to say their wedding. SOme priests are more traditional and dont permit anything other than hymens at a wedding service....others will let you personalise your service and bit a little more creative. And 5 weeks before a wedding the couple will normally have chosen their songs etc and maybe they have to rethink the whole service now.

with this particular couple it's more who the priest is. The girl has known him all her life, she's big into mass and the church and she's upset over it! I personally think its something that upsets the woman more then the man

some priests are nice and some are grumpy gits and the priest makes the difference in a big way, have seen this.

Disclaimer notice
I was not married in church so I am not talking from personal experience, but that off others.
OH I can however marry in a church as the catholic church do not recognise my first marriage, so any body fancy a big white cream wedding grin

I dunno. The Priest spends a lot of time at the dinner table afterwards with the main party. And a lot of people spend a lot of time talking to him.

he could well face legal action if they have to pospone the wedding !!! it will be hard to find a priest to do a weddinhg with only 5 weeks to go , most churchs and priests are booked up for weddings thid time of year and rebooking the hotel and everything will cost a bomb !

Hi Theo,

I understand where you are coming from, but my Mother (RIP) for example, insisted on getting the same Priest that married her, to do the service for my Parents to renew their vows 40 years later. She even waited weeks after their anniversary for him to be available..

I think somehow it depends on the parish church etc etc, i agree some priests can be right know it alls but u can get really nice priests too .. if the priest is not from the parish i dont think he can say the mass but if they planned on goen away to a forgein country or something like that the selected priest could say the mass i know its strange rules but u could get an aul biddy like what was in our parish contradicting everything as well like u gotta be carefull where u thread ur footsteps too !!!
