I think it is very destructive to the character of young lads. Boxing or a good martial arts style will instill discipline, confidence, courage, respect for your opponent and other people in general as well as many other good qualities. All I can see a young lad learning from this 'sport' is aggression and disrespect.

My cousin does this and fights all over the world and not a nicer fella would you meet.
But I agree that it might be something that someone does as an extension to learning the core values which they would learn in karate or judo etc.
Personally I feel its not a sport I would want my son involved in, but he's done kick boxing in the past and going to get him back into that again.

I'm sure your cousin is a fine fellow. He probably got into this form of entertainment after he learned the basics elsewhere... and to make some money, which of course what it's all about. Sherdog, the body that runs this show is a very interesting group of heads.

Bringing young lads to learn this would be like bringing them to learn pro boxing or WWF wrestling. All they would learn is aggressive 'kill' techniques. Nothing useful. You learn amature boxing or traditional martial arts first and if you have sense you never go into the professional entertainment side that is generally run by crooks.

Personally I'm a purist. I started with a Japanese sensei when I was 8 years old. Back then there was no kickboxing, mugendo or any of the other 'cheap crap' as he used to call the Chinese Kempo that was coming in from the US at that time.

I don't want to knock this stuff as entertainment any more than I would knock WWF wrestling or the old English wrestling with Giant Haystacks, Pat Roach and the lads. We used to love watching that on a Saturday even though we knew it was just a fixed show. But bringing kids to 'learn it'? Ah no Ted.

Thanks blushing
I was asking was it Mixed Martial Arts you were talking about? Isnt cage fighting MMA in a cage? My son did MMA and he was taught boxing and martial arts it did him no harm and he loved it at the time. Looking at the grown men doing it though it looks brutal wave

Cage Fighter Rips Off Friends Face and Tears Out His Still Beating Heart

I'd hate to see what he'd do to his enemies.
