If you're lloking to lose a few pounds weight training alone is not the way to go. But if you want to build muscle it is.
If you're trying to slim down cardio is the best way to lose weight. Walking, Running, Bike and Cross Trainer.
For the weight training make sure you warm up. Start eating less carbs and more protein. I suggest you start with the machines in the gym to get a guide of your strength and then move on to free weights.
