Yes, the chinese who live in the US are probably big fans of the chinese government...
Languages are ways of communication. They are sometimes associated with all sorts of "-isms", religions, or other "problematic areas", but should they be? Isn't a spade a spade regardless of how it's translated?
My last .02 on this subject (if it is deemed worth that much).
I love diversity, one of the things I actually like about Southern California. I am often told I am on the wrong end of an immigration discussion, legal or otherwise.
That being said, if I were to move to another country, my reasonable expectation is that I would have to try to assimilate to that country, not vice versa. That's all.
I'll take the pragmatic, and admittedly easy, way out: The english language is still spoken (as plarkin pointed out, in some cases, not very well) by the vast majority here.
we do NOT have an official language here, and the linguistics of this country have been ever-changing since we came here in the first place.
in other parts of the world, they make an effort to learn english to deal with the US, yet we get all pissy about even allowing people to speak their own language in our country.
i thought the spanish anthem was gorgeous...i'm sure that it would be just as beautiful in chinese.
i personally have not said the pledge of allegiance since i was in third grade. i agree, it's silly.
in fact, i agree with damned near everything that plarkin had to say in this thread. i am not threatened by diversity, i welcome it.
