I'm curious as to what most people think about social media sites and the intrusion that seems to be prevalent within the most ordinary of activities which link back to these sites.

Perhaps I'm "getting old" lol but when I click on a site do I really need to have Facebook and/or Pininterest links readily available to click onto? These are merely a couple of examples that I use, but am I one of the few that is resistant to clicking on these? I frankly rarely log onto facebook as I can call my friends so it really doesn't interest me as a site to frequent.

I suppose what I'm trying to get at is that in many ways I feel that we are manipulated by stores/sites etc. to be forced into hitting that click button in order to get something as simple as a "coupon" or enter a contest. Why do I need to see "tweets" across the bottom on my tv screen when I'm watching The Voice or some such show?

Perhaps I simply need to get smarter and play the game and use these sites to my advantage for a business venture .... it does make one think. So what are your thoughts and experiences?

This and a car site is the only social media I routinely engage in. I don't use facebook even though I'm a stock holder in the company. I really dislike how some of these co's mine data on peoples browsing history, friends, comments, politics, emails, etc etc. Google is one of the worst. It seems there is no such thing as privacy anymore.

Im very sceptical myself...I dont use much. I rarely use FB. It worries me that FB is the largest repository of personal info on the planet and the COO is a loose cannon. mumbling

Careful Lang, I was coerced into signing onto Linkedin for "business purposes" Every time I logged onto the site my junkbox would be overloaded for weeks. I would spend about two weeks blocking garbage. It never led to ANY business opportunities. I dont use it anymore...It makes me think of the Pied Piper leading all the mindless rats. very scary.

Maybe Im just too rebellious or non-conformist, but I dont see the need for it, and I seem to do just fine without all that. peace

Thanks for all the replies ... it seems that we are basically on the same page (I like rebellious people!!) lol

I was curious as to what others thought as yesterday in reading the left handed thread I decided to look at what merchandise was available online for us "lefties" .... the particular site I went too immediately had a popup window about clicking and linking to facebook ..... what does facebook have to do with me wanting to see their merchandise?

As well, in the past, I've tried to get online coupons and been redirected to log onto facebook in order to obtain the coupon. If I don't log in, no coupon. I choose not to obtain that coupon.

Venus I've seen "linked" as well for business profiles .... glad to see that info as I was unaware. I have been trying to brainstorm ideas for jobs/careers so part of my thinking was while I may totally like these forms of advertising, it must in fact work, otherwise it would be discontinued.
