M1ck1e: I have no idea why real snakes didn't make it to Ireland. But the pagan "snakes" were never "really" driven out of Ireland.
You say make it ti Ireland, which would infer the snakes came to Ireland and then "Myth" would tell.us Paddy drove them out. If he drove them out just as the ice meltthose snakes would end ou in Brittain. Then iof they were cute enough as Paddy did not drive them out they would continue on to mainland Europe as I would think that landbridge would happen later.
Assumiong they were snakes why did they en mass move "assuming Paddy hadno parti thos snakes exit". Tsarion is of the thought there were no snakes as in reptiles.
If I follow the Myth/History I have read I could trace my geneology to the Moors arriving here in this Island via The Iberian Penisula. Through Portugal, "The Port of The Gael", My family name is also mentioned in History ere this Island had the names Erinn, Banba, and Fidhola (sp), and indeed much earlierabout the time ofThe Hag of Bearra. Myth, History ? My town is mentionmed at the time of The Christ. History/ Myth ? Who knows.............?
Possible, quite possible. But as I think of my reading. Ireland may well not have been the extreme of Europe. old myth would tell us of Tir na Nog, Hy Brasil, maybe even Atlantis. Which if you follow that line of thinking those snakes would be moving East as of the icemelt. This would leave your theory of snakes moving West sending them into a receeding sea by Paddy to the East.
I don't quite dismiss old lore. Old sages long before Paddy would do a learning of Seven years to the Sage before they could even try to continue a verbal account of events. The Brehon Laws would havwe been a thing of high esteem and not for those given to their own accounts. Myth had apurpose and maybe even some truth.
