tony98: What is it about paddys day makes it so popular that people around the globe celebrate it, i mean vietnam w.t.f
I don't know being a pagan I don't celebrate "St. Patrick's Day". Due to my love of Ireland I personally celebrate Ireland on that day. Hay be happy, your country has a holiday that is celebrated in other parts of the world, one that is enjoyed and loved. That can only be said by few.
I often wonder why the world reveeres St Patrick's day all about the world. I think it is because deep down everyone loves a Paddy. He may drink a bit too much and cause a rucus. But for the most part when he sobers up he would say. Jaysus I'm sorry twas the demon drink dat did dat. St Patrick though is having the last laugh at all of us really.....
He was never Cannonized at all and is not really a Saint as The Benedictines never really liked our old Pat......
It is simply because we have exported so many people all over the world, and they were so homesick that they celebrated the national saint's day. It was called 'Drowning the Shamrock'
Many of the Irish in New York/Boston etc., became involved in the police force and fire service and that led to the big parades.
This then became fashionable not only in other parts of the world, but in Ireland itself which got a renewed sense of national identity, and resurrected the dying parades and celebrations, and now produce top-class family entertainment for the duration of the holiday.
M1ck1e: Being a pagan (a snake) I celebrate All Snakes Day.
Most, if not all, Christian holy days were pagan festive days originally. They just took them over.
As for snakes. The tradition is that it was St. Patrick rid Ireland of snakes, but the truth is, they never crosses over before the landbridge was covered by water, so they were never there to be got rid of.

Strange to say but Michael Tsarion had a whole other idea as to just what those "Snakes" really were....

true here, quoted "St. Patrick's Day is practically the Massachusetts official pride day, and its celebration is mandatory, not optional, wherever you travel..."

Saint Patrick is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland. It is true there are no snakes in Ireland, but there probably never have been – the island was separated from the rest of the continent at the end of the Ice Age. As in many old pagan religions, serpent symbols were common and often worshipped. Driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to that pagan practice. While not the first to bring christianity to Ireland, it is Patrick who is said to have encountered the Druids at Tara and abolished their pagan rites.

Tsarion's view would also be as to there not being Snakes in Ireland. But they were never really Snakes to begin with for him. How Ireland looked ast to Ice Age times I have no idea as to how the Snakes knew it was time to leave as they were going to be left on an island if they overstayed. St Paddy on his second visit some theories say was welcomed by a well organized peoples (Elites maybe) who could converste with Paddy in Latin. Just a thought there as to Islands. Why did the Snakes leave Ireland and stay in the Island of Brittain ? Why did they not continue away from the ice melt ang go on to mainland Europe ?

I have no idea why real snakes didn't make it to Ireland. But the pagan "snakes" were never "really" driven out of Ireland.
