while i was away for christmas...my family were discussing the amount of left-handed people we have. two of my children are left-handed, as well as bunches of cousins, aunts, etcetera.
my mother fondly looked at me and said that the girls got it from me...that "i" was left-handed. i told her that i always thought that i SHOULD have been...(i'm ambidextrous)...and my aunt and mom went on to explain that no, i wasn't left-handed, but neither was i right-handed.
apparently, when i went into kindergarten, i couldn't make up my mind. i wrote with both hands, and went the whole year that way. when i hit first grade, however...they forced me to make a decision. my teacher was right-handed, as well as all the students in my class...so of course, that's what i went with. easier on the teacher, yes?
i told my mother that i thought that was a cop-out. she said that the school was worried about "brain confusion".
anyhow, i write a bit better with my right now...but i do use both, and i switch off when i'm eating, too, lol. it just took more effort. when working mathematics equations, i switch off to my left, and often get the answer i was searching.

has anyone ever heard of "brain confusion" before?

I am ambidextrious to a degree.
I am right handed. Broken right wrist in 4 places so I do alot with my left hand to compensate. I can't write lefthanded but most other things are done lefthanded.

My dad is like that. He eats, throws and writes left handed, but he golfs, bats and kicks righty. Go figure. But he is very intelligent like you nwnstar--maybe that has something to do with it.
i tried for years to just use my right...but got into martial arts when i was ten. you have to use both there...and it brought about a determination to learn to write and such with my left.
I don't recall anyone saying that, but the teacher who tried to force me to write right-handed just told my parents that it was "abnormal" to be left-handed. My dad went to the school and told her to leave me the H alone.
they tell me that i showed no preference for either hand...that i used both regularly. that it wasn't..."forcing me to be right-handed" so much as getting me to choose which i preferred.
that was the story they gave my mother...and she tells me that the concern is a valid one.
i take notes in school with both hands...i make certain that stupid metal spiral is in the middle, and depending on the side of the page...i just switch hands.
my left-hand writing is better than most people can manage with their right hand. it's a TINY bit slower...but i write in both print and cursive.
i even switch with chopsticks. i choose depending on the person next to me...i HATE bumping elbows!
