A friend has just rang me saying her 13 year old daughter's been receiving odd phone calls from a much older man. Each time his number is withheld or from different areas of the country. The police are now involved but it is believed he may have tracked her down via hacking into MSN but there is no evidence at present. He does know details of her such as hair colouring, colour of her eyes etc. At first the girls thought it was a school friend mucking about but it went beyond a joke when in one of his calls apparently he said "I can do things to you and your friend" and names her friend, the girls hung up on him. The calls have started about 1.30 am and as early as 7 am over the past few days - my friends husband said he 'lost his rag' with the bloke the other night and the man was very calm asking to speak to the daughter, then asked after my friend before he hung up. I haven't got all of the details and will keep everyone posted. I have instructed my kids never to give out their phone numbers to anyone, on the computer or likewise. I just thought for those of you out there who allow their kids to use MSN until it's proved different to speculation to be extra vigilant.

this is a sad story of the world we live in,

my son uses msn he know all the rules and about keeping himself safe, same as when he is out without an adult,

i often ask him who he is chatting to and where he knows them from etc, but would never stop him from using the computer,

you can only teach your kids right from wrong and hope to god that nothing ever happens to them, you cannot wrap them it cotton wool or they will never survive in this awfull world we have bought them into.

i hope this gets sorted out for your friend,

hug

Thanks. The thing is my daughters friend only chats to her friends - the police believe it is a man who is calling himself Paul who some how hacks into their conversations and silently reads what's going on and takes note of any details he feels important. Apparently it's possible - so I've told my kids never to give any personal details out on msn at all whether it's a friend, me or someone else - because you never know who's listening!!!

There meeting with the police again today so will keep you informed.

1 - It is almost impossible to relate the Tel. No. to MSN . If your PC at home is not secure then businesses and individuals from anywhere can access information held on your PC.
2 - It appears that your problem is local . A telephone number could be obtained from many sources . I guess that your number is on your friends and family's mobiles , forms etc. These are the most likely places where your No. may have gone stray . Think twice before leaving your phone number with people that you do not know that well .

It's quite like that my friends daughter gave her phone number out during a msn chat by the sounds of it. Their computer isn't protected against anything as they had it new a while ago from a catalogue or something so they installed windows and the printer and that was it - we've got a router with built in firewall, plus so much anti-virus, anti-adware, anti-spyware because of my books and my son's web-design stuff/server - so last night my son and I spent hours sending them the links to relevant programmes to download/purchase or install.

The mind boggles Pauline. Why can't people like this put their brain cells to good use? rather than causing others missery and havoc dunno

There are a few good downloads available, AVG which is an anti virus and also McAfee ADVENT Stinger which isn't a full anti virus but does pick up certain things that other programs don't. Another one I found priceless is McAfee SiteAdvisor, there are lots of dodgy sites about and the advisor tests each site and tells if it is safe or to use with caution. Thes might be of use to your friend.

I hope things get sorted for them soon.
