SuzieSouzou brought up a very good point in another thread about what little support the victims of hurricane Katrina have gotten from President Bush.
We read in Mitchell's thread " THE BOOM OUTSIDE BAGHDAD" about all the rebuilding going on in Iraq and improving their lives and economy. Yes..if you bomb the hell out of a country you are going to have rebuild it but what about our own people?
Do you think it is fair and do you think the gulf states should be a priority over Iraq?
How about pull out all troops, ask Iraq how they want to manage the rebuilding of their country, and assist them....
...then turn that eye back onto those in need in the Gulf States...and perhaps train the soldiers in the art of construction and set them free to help others, for the power of good....
is just a thought...not so realistic though...I know
This president has blatently neglected the victims of hurricane Katrina. There should of been a steady effort from day one.
That is a fine idea Jesse but there are many more resources needed that they are not getting. Much of the labor is being imported from Mexico as far as construction.
good question...I'd like to side with Katrina vics.. But I guess the question I have would be at what point does the state take responsibility and when do the Feds. step in?
Mr. Mitchell, how can one hold the governor and mayor responsible when the levees that broke are overseen, maintained, and built by the US Army Corps of Engineers.. which is federal?
They have no jurisdiction whatsoever in an instance like that, and I highly doubt that they really get a vote in the matter at all.
No, it hasn't been fully repaired yet, and they're still 1/2 way through the re-building of the modifications they wanted to get done to strengthen it. The predictions are that it wouldn't be done before hurricane season again - know what that means?
Nope, it could be minimal, or it could be another Katrina or worse. With the way the weather and jet stream patterns are, they do predict a very bad season but we won't know until such time as it rolls through.
I like that question because its been on my mind for awhile. Our local government has failed us. Its not the first time. Sadly, Louisiana has a long-running issue with finding halfway decent politicians. I've only been in this state for a few years and its been nothing but one disaster after another.
So what happens now? Do the citizens suffer because our leaders have failed? Not only are we in desperate need of labor but we need an authoritative presence on the street. We have t0o many bad cops out there (some are currently on trial for murder) and I fear for the well-being of those good cops asked to pick up the slack. Since the beginning of the New Year, it seems a gang war or some kind of nonsense has invaded the city. People in safe, beautiful, historic, unaffected areas are being murdered in their beds!
There has been alot of progress in the city. I was there a month after Katrina and I was there again last month. There's been some great change and its almost solely thanks to the hard work of amazing volunteers and determined locals who love our city and want to make it great again. But we still need help.
People love to play the blame-game when it comes to Katrina. Blame the locals, blame the mayor, blame the governor. But I'm sick of it. Passing the blame doesn't get anything done. Even if the Federal government refused to recognize their own shortcomings in handling the matter directly after the storm, I wouldn't care if they'd step up now and do something.
If Bush is so confident that he can save the Middle East, then restoring order and rebuilding a city of his own country should be a piece of cake.
You call it a "sinking bowl" but many people call it Home. I was dragged into moving to Louisiana kicking and screaming. But I have fallen in love with New Orleans. It is an amazing city.
Not to mention an important port for the rest of the US. If Americans can't recognize the charm of the city, they should atleast recognize its economic importance to the rest of the country.
