I am not a deply religious person, but I have a strong belief in God.
I have never heard these words before myself, but my interpretation is there is only very few paths to eternal life..the main path is through a belief in God.
I don't think it is about ETERNAL life - just LIFE...
I'm not religious at all, but because there have been a handful of interesting people involved in creating the religions, there are some exemples of interesting things that these people have said - this is one exemple, IMO.
I am curious about what this person meant by "the narrow road". Any ideas?

The narrow road may mean there are NOT many options concerning how life should be led according to religious dogma. The only option is to live as God wants us to live...and those examples of how life should be lived are in the religious texts of that particular faith.
Hmmm, this is pretty much how I interpreted it too, until lately, when I started to think about it as maybe having to do with "choice".
Sometimes I think maybe there are too many active choices for us to make, there is no obvious place for anyone anymore, the road is, so to speak, too broad, which confuses and drains us, and often stands in the way of life...
It could mean that the roads is narrow because not alot of people will choose to take it because it is not the path of least resistance!!! It is a path filled with pain, struggle and lessons that some people willingly avoid, yet the one that leads to the most freedom in the end!!!!!
I think the gate is small because it is the most unattractive gate to enter and there is only one way to enter it and that is by personal choice and not everyone will make that choice, but perhaps choose gates that seem more appealing on the outside, yet only offer temporary comfort!!!!
But it seems that even the road most travelled is filled with pain and struggle...
Maybe we would be happier if we had less choices? Life today (in the western world) offers more possibilities than ever before, and that can be just as much a blessing as it can be a curse...
It is from the Bible. Look there and read the rest of the scripture.
Plainly it means that the way to eternal life is a narrow path. The same as a narrow path up a mountain. All steps outside that path leads to destruction. Eternal death. The same as walking outside of the safe path up the mountain.
It is talking about there being a large amount of ways to death and the way to life is a narrow way. Much like one wire in a phone cable, there is only one that will work and all others will not.
