Next time you want to walk down the street with somebody and this is your first time walking down the street with them, make sure that that person walks by the curb instead of you. Just in case that person doesn't have any coordination in walking in a straight line while they are looking at you and talking to you. They almost got me hit by a bus today.

Wow, coordination issues aside, this runs counter to my premise that I should always take the street-side as a chivalrous gesture.innocent

I've done both, for varying reasons: When taking part in living history events, the etiquette of the 19th century demanded that the lady always be on the gentleman's right arm. In the not so polite regions of the American West, it was often reversed so as to allow the gentleman ready access to his side-arm while simultaneously (ideally!) pushing his lady out of harms way with his left arm.

In real life, it seems that my lady and I switch sides according to whichever is most comfortable for one or the other or both of us.

I asked a man with four arms which way is north. He just shrugged and held up his arms and pointed. So I started walking in that direction. He must have been telling me the long way to get there. dunno
