Yeah, leaking a noticable drip overnight will lose you enough oil to eventually cause problemes. You will certainly have to top it up! It won't stall unless it runs right out of oil and the engine seizes due to lack of lubrication.

Lack of lubrication is such a curse and should be avoided at all cost! I like astrolube!

The antilock indicates a fault at one time, can you feel it working when you brake heavy? Does the Ebrake still work? if so the switch is stuck and some spray will likely free it.

If the truck smells like exhaust while you are driving you have an exhaust leak.

If it smells like gas your gastank or gastank venting may be problematic.

If it smells like a baloney sandwich, you just might have to do some dirty work!

which brake squeels? Both front, one front , both back, one back? The antilock is on the front so I would suspect one is worn enough to deliver a trouble code. You should really replace them both at the same time though. That will be a couple of hundred I bet.

The ebrake probably has gotten very dirty underneath the vehicle and the spring that should return your footpedal to normal is not strong enough to counter the dirt/grass/mud/ whatever is underneath and binding the cable. Often a corner garage can get this fixed for like 10 bucks, but you would have to lift the vehicle and thoroughly clean the cable that runs from the foot-pedal to the rear brakes.

if they replace the muffler and it still smells, then the leak is UPSTREAM of the muffler, closer to the engine. Just having the vent open or something will smell like exhaust.
Ask them when they do the job to identify any and all leaks, that's part of their job anyway. You can ask them to tape up any small leaks, they may have something like foil tape, or you could get some at crappy tire. Often if the metal is cleaned, that is important, the tape will stick...and the exhaust leak is fixed until a permanent fix.

If the brakes were done it may be a simple fix.
The pre safety, what is that? In sask we have a safety inspection, and it is pretty involved. You could be looking at a lot of money to repair if they give you a list of stuff to fix before they let you drive it.

well a pre safety is the same thing as a safety inspection... If anything needs to be fixed.. they give u a list of what needs to be done.. and you have ten days to fix it .. or you have to repay for the safety...
You can get a permit.. when a car isnt safetied.. so I have a permit for 40 days.. cause the owner of the truck before.. can get up to 4 ten day permits.. So .. yah .. Im sure hoping I dont have a lot more that I have to fix... cause. this sucks balls.

well, ya know you could fix the exhaust thing and then turn around and dump it for 1500 if the safety is bad news.

Don't you know any backyard greasemonkeys?

See what the safety report is, selling may be your best bet.

ok - the problem with my car is the front passanger bearings are in desperate need of replacement. When i took my car in they did a 21 point inspection and found that the rear driver side bearing "should" be replaced soon, front brake pads were low (not in need of replacing ....... yet) and I have a small pinhole in my exhaust.

LOL - so if I was to repair EVERYTHING at once, I'm looking at about a $800 bill. wow

I think I'll just get the bearings done first.

The pinhole in the exhaust is an easy fix! Duckttape will take care of that.
rolling on the floor laughing

The bearings are questionable. If you know someone with a little mechanical competence then you should ask that person to help you. The parts to exchange the bearings are not expensive it is the labor that will kill you.

The questionable part is are you sure they need to be replaced or just packed again?
Cause the shop will tell you you need new bearings because the expense is higher and for them better pay.
I don't trust mechanics without a second opinion. If they know that you have no idea what they are talking about, sadly but true they will rake you over the coals. So be careful.
Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up.

Luckily for me, there are a few mechanics here that I can turn to. They looked over the car and said that my front bearing DO need to be replaced, but the back ones just repacked. Which was good to know because for my car - to replace the back bearings, it would have costed me almost $500!!

So, the car is going in tomorrow morning - and because I told them aboutthe second opinion and they rechecked the back bearings ....... they offered me a free oil change for the mistake!!

Right on good for you!! It is sad but yes they do try to get the most out of people by doing more work or fixing things that don't need it.

I am happy for ya that it worked out. If you do have a friend who knows a bit about cars then get him to repack your bearings at least once a year better yet twice cause that will make them live a little longer.

But free oil change is good too thats 40$ or more in your pocket.
